Development

The development of understanding of two-dimensional representations (pictures) will be described first, followed by that for three-dimensional (toy) representations.

Pictures

Babies recognise realistic life-sized coloured pictures of everyday objects shortly after they demonstrate ‘definition by use’ for real objects. A 13-month-old after gazing intently at a life-sized picture of a watch, may nod his head from side to side vocalising ‘te-toch, te-toch, te-toch’.

What developmental attributes is he using to indicate that he understands that the picture represents a watch?

Situational head gesture and situational phrase/vocalisation

Realistic medium-sized coloured (10 × 10cm) and small pictures (7 × 7cm) pictures of everyday items are currently recognised by children in Western cultures between 15 and 18 months and 18 and 27 months, respectively – sometimes even earlier.
